Match Trivia
Newcastle United were fortunate to win at St James’s Park last night against Glasgow Rangers by 2 to 1. It was only a friendly game, but some 12,000 spectators saw some fine football on the part of the visitors. The latter certainly were hefty, but they knew how to work a ball and to put finish to their efforts. It was somewhat different with the Tynesiders, who were not well balanced, were erratic and tried to work impossible positions in the hope of getting into a scoring position. There were lessons for Newcastle in the play of the visitors, who gave points not only in control and combination, but in shooting, in placing corners and in taking free kicks. They were always the more alert on the ball, and there was no aimless kicking. When a pass was given, it was made with a purpose, and only the excellent tackling of Newcastle’s backs saved United from defeat. Man for man the Scots were the superior, and it was unfortunate that a blunder by Robb should have meant defeat. Harris scored for the Tynesiders inside five minutes, and afterwards came near repeating the trick. The Rangers made many dangerous raids and kept the home halves and backs hard pressed. Lawrence’s task consisted of saving corners, which were always well placed. Newcastle’s attacks always broke down badly. In the second half Cunningham scored a fine goal after eight minutes, after Lawrence had saved from the left. Then the Rangers began to overrun Newcastle, and only Hudspeth and McCracken were able to withstand them. Archibald put in a lovely shot, which looked like scoring, but Cairns, who was offside, touched the ball as it went into the goal and the point was disallowed. In the last few minutes, a blunder by Robb lost is side the game. A long kick by Hudspeth saw Harris bear down on the goal. Robb came out and both players missed the ball, it rolled into the empty goal, Mitchell was who deputizing from Seymour, did well towards the finish, but the pick of the home forwards was McDonald. Dixon’s weight at centre half came in very useful for Newcastle
