Match Trivia

It was late in the game at Fir Park before Rangers got into their stride, and by that time they were a couple of goals behind. On their display in the opening portion the Lanarkshire eleven fully merited their victory. Lennie and Ferrier were the best wing afield, and Muirhead and McCandless had not their trouble to seek. Hart did not find Ferrier so responsive, but Ferguson was always on the alert, and when he shot into the corner of the net after eighteen minutes the success was well deserved. There was really no comparison between the teams during the first half. Motherwell by their superior forward play were top dog, and Lennie’s second goal, following a corner was in the natural course of events. It was a different story after the cross-over, Rangers dominated in the outfield, secured corner after corner, did everything in fact, but score. They had chances, once Hansen, who changed places with Henderson, had Rundell’s goal at his mercy, but he shot over. Cairns made a great effort to bore his wat through, but was downed just outside the penalty area, and Nicholson shot behind. While Motherwell over the piece were the more impressive combine, yet so hard did the Ibrox men press in the second half that they were due a goal. Undoubtedly the absence of Morton, Archibald, Cunningham and Meiklejohn was felt. It was a half-back, however, where the losers were weakest. As spoilers, Nicholson, Dixon and Muirhead were fine, but in attending to their own forwards, they were in a different class from the opposition. Craig Brown was a great stalwart; in the earlier period he was amongst his forwards, and later on he was a grand third back. Both Jackson and Newbigging came out of the fray with signal success; their policy was ‘safety first’, and it paid their side. Tennant was the outstanding forward afield. This youngster has the makings of a great winger. Robb, I thought, might have averted the first goal; he dived too late for the ball. Manderson and McCandless, especially the latter, passed muster, but they were overworked in the first half owing to the weakness of the middlemen. Cairns was the best of a very moderate front rank, with McDiarmid a good second. I was not impressed with Hansen.
