Match Trivia
The end of the football season is approaching and the match on fir Park last Saturday between Motherwell and Rangers brought Motherwell’s home League games to a close. It was unfortunate that this game should be played on the same date as the international as it affected the gate considerably. There would be a crowd of about 3000 present at the match, the gate and stand drawings totalling £60 odds. The weather was fine and the pitch was in quite good condition. The game especially in the first half, was a not a brilliant one. The Rangers pressed at the opening, bit it was fully fifteen minutes before Campbell managed to beat McDonald. The play was fairly even, but the Rangers were decidedly more aggressive than the homesters, who were particularly weak at shooting and threw away many chances. Half-time score – Rangers 1; Motherwell 0. In the second half Motherwell equalised through Donaldson. A penalty kick against the home team shortly after this nullified the good of this goal for Campbell converted the kick into a second goal for the Rangers. There were some exciting passages after this, in which the home forwards gave the Rangers defence some trouble, but the weak finishing spoiled all chances. A penalty against Rangers for Johnstone being brought down within the area looked promising for Motherwell. Reid took the kick, but Newbigging saved, and Motherwell’s chance was lost. The game ultimately ended in a win for Rangers by 2 goals to 1.
