Match Trivia
Motherwell’s ascendancy over Rangers at Fir Park was more pronounced than the score indicates. There was an element of doubt regarding the penalty kick which gave the Ibrox side their goal; on the other hand, Motherwell’s points were both finely taken, and only sheer bad luck robbed them of further success. Fir Park’s sanded surface did not lend itself to methodical movement. Consequently, while there was no lack of dash or courage on the part of the players, they, like their calculations, had the unhappy knack of being upset at inopportune moments and in devious ways. Motherwell’s opening goal was secured by Frank Kelly with a high oblique shot, Hamilton, the Clyde reserve goalkeeper, who deputised for Lock, being evidently taken by surprise. Before the interval Blair scored from a penalty after Rundell had saved. Rangers in a vigorous offensive in the second half, looked like carrying everything before them, but Motherwell’s defence held out. Then the home side took matters in hand, and when Morgan gained the leading point exactly the same way as Kelly had done they only obtained part of their due. In Rangers’ forward quintette, which disappointed me, Martin and C Duncan were the more purposeful. Hendry was very successful at half-back, and Manderson and Blair played strongly. Murray put in a great afternoons work for Motherwell – he was the best back afield, I would say. The middle men all did well. Morgan was the star turn in front, and Rundell was safe in goal
