Match Trivia
Rangers had out their full Cup team at Cappielow yesterday, but they were not in cup-winning form. Indeed, lowly Morton were a shade unfortunate not to share the points. Of course, Rangers may have been holding something in reserve, and their forward play often suggested this. Unless on the wings, thrust was lacking and Smith and McPhail showed no sign of their well-known understanding. The ball was often played back when it might have been taken through at a risk. McPhail was never conspicuous but would be quite satisfied in standing up to the test. Main appeared to have recovered his confidence. The Ibrox defence had a right hard game against puzzling forwards whose haphazard methods were hard to fathom. Black pestered the life out of Simpson, and Leckie was sometimes too clever for Brown, while Gray had to watch McGarry like a hawk. Dawson once in each half had a superlative sabe from Black. The Greenock defence was gritty and refused to be subdued. All three Rangers goals were opportunistic, and the first was in the nature of a grit. McGarrys opening goal in 16 minutes was a beauty. He cut in almost square, and unexpectedly shot with his right foot, the ball passing just inside the near upright at terrific speed. Bungling by the Mortin defence presented Rangers with the equaliser in three minutes. Stewart rashly ran out to a ball Simpson was covering, but between them they lost it leaving Venters no opposition. Venters crossed the front of a vacant goal and Smith tipped the ball to Kinnear, who tapped it through. Rangers took the lead on the half-hour. A Kinnear cross whizzed over to Main, who dashed in and headed past Stewart. In six minutes more Morton were equal again. Simpson handled just outside the penalty line, and Mooney shot a free-kick direct for goal. It struck an opponent and the ball wert off at a tangent past the waiting Dawson. Rangers winner came ten minutes after the interval. Following a corner the ball came to Venters, who shot on the drop and beat Stewart all ends up from ten yards. Morton sagged a bit following this but came again to stage a fine finish. In the last-minute Black just missed the equaliser from Collins cross, Dawson tipping his close-in header over the bar
