At Cappielow I witnessed a right rousing struggle, in which there was some hefty charging and an occasional display of temper. The culminating point was reached twenty minutes after the interval, when Nicholson and McIntyre were ordered to the pavilion. Prior to this midway through the opening portion – the Greenock right back sustained a head injury in contact with Nicholson, and after being attended to by Dr Milne he returned to the fray. Right through the piece the exchanges were of the liveliest nature, the ball travelling from end to end with amazing rapidity, but so keen was the tackling of the defenders in the opening stages, that shooting opportunities were at a premium. After twelve minutes play Dixon saw daylight between himself and the net, and with a finely judged first-times rattled the rigging. Rangers did not long retain the lead, as five minutes later McKay put the copestone on a fine bit of work by Buchanan by flashing the ball past the helpless Robb. If the goalkeepers had an easy time in the opening portion, they had a particularly lively time in the closing period. Edwards was the busier keeper, and it is to his credit that he was not beaten by some of the volleys directed at his charge. Henderson, who evidently found his shooting boots after McIntyre’s retiral – delivered several expresses and Cunningham, Morton and Cairns joined in the effort to regain the lead, but the Greenock keeper dealt with all attempts in masterly fashion. At the other end French tested Robb with a teaser, Brown topped the bar with a nicely judged header, while the Ibrox keeper was in luck when he got his finger-tips to a McNab rocket. In a Rangers side which was only superior in the closing quarter, Meiklejohn, Cairns and Morton were the stars, while for Morton Edwards, McIntyre, Buchanan, McNab, McKay and Brown were the men who mattered
