Jimmy signed for Rangers back in January of 1955, a fee of £5,000 securing the services of Dunfermline’s half-back.
However, it was as a fearless centre forward at Ibrox that Jimmy secured that legendary status. Forming a lethal partnership with Ralph Brand, they would terrorise defences throughout Scotland during the 1960’s in what is still considered by many to be the greatest Rangers side of them all.
An inspirational figure within that side, Jimmy played 317 first team matches for Rangers scoring 162 goals (Brand scoring 206) during which time he won countless major honours.
Jimmy's first winners medal, earned during a Scottish Cup victory over Kilmarnock at Hampden in 1960, would be a particularly proud occasion for Millar and it was a competition he would enjoy down the years. It was Jimmy’s two goals that proved to be the difference on the day as over 108,000 watched on in anticipation.
This matched his semi-final replay exploits where he also netted a double in a 4-1 rout over Celtic (having scored Gers equaliser in the first game which ended 1-1).
Another double followed in the 1963/64 Scottish Cup Final win over Dundee, his great friend and strike partner Ralphie Brand netting the other in our Treble winning season.
He represented Scotland twice but his international career seemed somewhat jinxed.
Inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame, Millar was famously described as being Walter Smith’s all time favourite Rangers player.
Jimmy Millar died on 20th October 2022 at the age of 87.
