Match Trivia
These teams met in a friendly match at Anfield before 8000 spectators. The home team was represented by the reserve eleven, whilst there were some alterations on the visitor’s side from their full League combination. The opening stages favoured the visitors, and after a short spell of pressure, a shot from the right wing beat Perkins. The Rangers continued to hold the advantage, the Liverpool forwards working in very ragged fashion. A smart rush by the visitors’ front rank enabled Miller to add a second goal with a good shot, Perkins falling in his attempt to save. The Rangers were although superior in their movements, and the only dangerous shot which Liverpool put in during the first half was from Geary, whose attempt just went outside. The home halves worked hard, but the forwards made no headway, and the Rangers custodian was seldom called upon to handle. At halftime the Scotchmen led by 2 goals to nil. Play was dreadfully slow after resuming, the home team showing no sort of form, and the Rangers did the bulk of the attacking. A smart run by the left wing let in Smith, who drove with tremendous force but Perkins brought off fine clearance. At Length the Liverpool forwards infused more energy into their work, and Marshall put across a capital centre, which was however badly missed. A scrimmage in the Rangers goal resulted, and though several shots were sent in, the ball was eventually got away. After a brief incursion by the visitors, during which Miller again put in the net, but was given offside, Liverpool again worked down, Birchall placing to Marshall, who centred finely, but Jones made a feeble attempt to convert, and other efforts to score were rendered abortive by weak shooting. A clever run from the Rangers centre forward, and ending by shooting brilliantly, Perkins brought off a remarkably fine save. Liverpool then attacked strenuously, and a centre from the right wing being well placed by Marshall, Kelly scored but the point was annulled for offside. Play now favoured the home side, and Dickie was repeatedly called upon, but he and the backs defended grandly, and were impassable. Several forwards seemed afraid to shoot and the final result was a victory for the Rangers. Score – Glasgow Rangers 2: Liverpool 0.
