Match Trivia
Rangers were given a warm reception from 38,000 people at Anfield yesterday, and they were also cheered when they left the field, for in winning by 2-0, they had given an exhibition of football that is seldom seen nowadays. The work of the forward line was particularly fine. The division moved with the ease and precision of a well-regulated machine, and but for a resource of Scott, Lucas, McKinlay and McNab in defence, Liverpool would have been pulverised. The Scottish League champions rise superior to adverse ground conditions. On a baked ground, they exhibited remarkable control, and dominated the play throughout in a fast, sporting contest. Both Archibald and Alan Morton were in rampant mood, and their admirable centres were always full of menace. From one of Archibald’s crosses Henderson adroitly headed Scott, and so gave the Rangers an interval lead. In the second half the Rangers retained their grip and continued to delight with elusive footwork and combination. Scoring, however, was not easy against such a skilful defence as that of Liverpool, but when Morton dropped over another excellent ball Cunningham smote it with power and unerring accuracy, and recorded point number two. The fraction of a second prevented the Scots from Finishing three up, for as a piledriver was on its way to the net the ‘time-up whistle’ sounded. Previous to that Scott had wonderful saves from Cairns and Cunningham. Arthur Dixon retired in the closing minutes with a face injury. The centre half-back, however, hopes to be fir enough to turn out tomorrow against Manchester United at Old Trafford
