Match Trivia

John Campbell Benefit Match, In spite of the rain which fell throughout yesterday afternoon there was a large attendance of spectators at Windsor Park, where Glasgow Rangers opposed Linfield in the match organised as a tribute to Johnny Campbell, the clever Linfield forward, who sustained a broken leg earlier in the season. The Scottish League leaders did not field their strongest side but played clever football and won by a goal to nil, and secured the gold pins presented by Mr D Emerson. Harland and Everton goalkeeper, appeared for the first time since his injury while playing against Chelsea, and had a cordial reception. During the interval a novel athletic contest took place between Cecil Ogle, the Ulster sprint champion, and Wm Campbell, the Irish walking champion. The distance was 440 yards, the runner conceding 150, but Campbell won easily. The High Sheriff (Alderman JA Duff, MP) kicked off. Rangers opened strongly, and following clever play on the left, Harland was called upon to save, the Everton keeper clearing well. McCracken had a chance at the other end, but kicked too far ahead, and Manderson cleared, the Rangers’ back also heading away from Moorhead. Archibald showed pace on the right, and centred smartly, but Hansen shot over. Rangers played polished football in the open, but their finishing was poor, and Archibald shot wildly after manoeuvring a fine opening. Twenty minutes from the start the visitors went ahead, a strong drive from McDonald being partially stopped by Harland, who, however, allowed the ball to roll over the goal line into the net. Two corners to Linfield brought no result, and then Nicholson caused Harland to handle with a fast drive from 25 years. Reid checked the Linfield right on several occasions, and Manderson from a free kick sent past the upright. A centre from Muirhead was smartly turned into goal by Hansen, but Harland saved the Dane’s shot. Rangers continued to have the better of the play, and close on the interval Meiklejohn sent behind following neat work by all the forwards. The visitors rearranged their team at the interval, Rollo going to outside left and Muirhead dropping back to left half, McDonald coming into the inside left position. The Scottish Leaguers still continued to monopolise the play, and Moorhead twice headed away dangerous centres, while individual raids by Savage were easily frustrated by the Rangers’ defence. Hamilton’s first shot of the match came from McCracken fifteen minutes after the restart, and the Rangers’ goalkeeper cleared well. Hansen had a great chance to put his side further ahead following a free kick taken by Meiklejohn, but his finishing effort was wild. McDonald then drove a fast shot over the bar, and a Linfield rush gave Savage an opening to test Hamilton from long range. The Linfield centre had a further chance after McGrillen had dribbled through, but the ball got too far ahead, and Hamilton had no difficulty in clearing. Moorhead might have equalised from a centre by McEwan, and then McCracken hit the crossbar with the keeper beaten. Robinson also hit the bar, the ball going behind, and two corners to Linfield were cleared
