Match Trivia
These two teams met at Bank Park, Leith on Saturday before about 4000 spectators. The weather was of the gloomiest description. The Rangers lost the toss, and played against a strong wind. Starting the ball punctually at four o’clock, it was early run up to Russell’s quarters where the western men were lucky in receiving a corner. This was fruitless, and though the scrambling round the post looked a good thing for the visitors, Russell was at his post and always ready. Bruce of Leith did the fist bit of good individual play, passing Kerr, Barker and Mitchell. He was on Haddow ere proper protection had been taken, but the outcome was a foozle. Some vigorous open play followed this little burst in the centre of the field. The Rangers however were subjected once more to a serious assault, but the leather from Ross’s foot glanced of the referee’s person and went into very safe territory. Kerr and Bruce did one or two smart things, and then the Rangers had a look in. After a brilliant piece of passing, Barker tried a very short shot for goal. One of the Leith men was unhappily in the road, and the leather found its way on the wrong side of the post. The blue jerseys came to the front once again, Barker distinguishing himself, and with Kerr, Gray and Blyth manipulating one of the finest runs yet observed. Unfortunately after Gray slipping his foot when on the ball, McCreadie about 20 yards from the covered goal, took his place, and kicked apparently for the far off side of the adjacent field. Having lost this very favourable opportunity another of the same sort did not occur for some time. In the meantime Leith wee doing their utmost to fluster Haddow, and but for the manner in which Smith and Drummond assisted by the three half’s, packed their goal, serious results had been almost inevitable. Bruce put in a swift shot in the midst of this onslaught, but it was stopped. Barker now made a magnificent attempt, and with a low swift shot nearly scored. The Rangers were not to be beaten off, and Steel after a somewhat severe tussle overcame Russell, and scored the first goal of the game. Immediately afterwards Bruce was on the tack for Leith, and after creating a pretty safe situation for his own side, Walker stepped to the front and equalised. Halftime score – Rangers 1: Leith Athletic 1. At the commencement of the second half the left wing of the Rangers once more drew up in fine style before Russell, and a beautiful ground shot from Kerr was stopped with difficulty. Some more severe pressing looked as if the Leith men were to be subjected to the same hard pressure as their opponents were in the first period, but suddenly and to the surprise of everyone, the Athletic broke away in one of their famous rushes. Do what they could the Rangers were simply powerless to stay its progress, and it remained to Smith and Drummond to stem it if they could. By a strategic movement both were drawn to the left, and with an opening for Lee, it was thought he would score. Haddow however stopped him, but Ross came in time and sent the leather through in clean style. Once again the visitors left sprang to the van, and passing over to Steel the score was again equalised. With the exception of one or two dangerous attacks from the Athletic, the remainder of the game lay principally with the Rangers. The result was a draw – Rangers 2 goals: Leith Athletic 2 goals.
