Match Trivia
The curtain was rung down on Lanarkshire football for the season on Saturday with a game between Glasgow Rangers and a team selected from the shire club, and as a result of the contest the Motherwell Masonic Temple Fund, for the benefit of which the match took place, should be considerably augmented there being a large crowd present to see how the ‘Black County’ would perform against the famous city combination. While the Light Blues were strongly represented the Lanarkshire team was a doubtful quantity up to the last moment, owing to several of the selected players failing to put in an appearance. Palmer substituted Adams in goal, Johnstone (said to be a junior from Ponfeigh) played vice Cowan at left half, and Cameron (Burnbank Athletic) was introduced in the forward line as partner to Pool. The game was conducted in the friendliest manner possible, and while lacking the ‘fire’ of a league or cup-tie, was nevertheless always interesting. In the opening stages the dapper little Airdrie left winger was early in evidence, and created favourable comment by his fearless play against Nick Smith. The Shire were the first to count Johnstone finding the net with the best shot of the game, but before the interval Rangers notched a couple, Speedie being the marksman on both occasions. Within five minutes of the opening of the second half, Robertson increased the Light Blues lead with a long shot, and from this stage the Lanark lads monopolised the game for the most part, and quickly put a different aspect on affairs, Reid, Tennant and McNab all finding the meshes before the cassation, much to the delight of the spectators, the game ending – Lanarkshire 4, Rangers 3. Of the Lanarkshire players, both backs were good, while Pritchard and McNab stuck tenaciously to their more renowned opponents. The forwards were very uneven in the opening half, but combined better towards the finish, Hamilton and Tennant being best. After the match a happy social was held in the lesser hall of the Masonic Temple and it is expected that something like £60 will be available for the building fund. Is only falls to be added that the Rangers played the match without taking a single penny – even in expenses – a grateful action fully appreciated by the merry men of Motherwell
