Match Trivia
These teams met on Rugby Park, Kilmarnock before nearly 10,000 spectators. Killie won the toss, and after Hamilton kicked off the home forwards made a rush for Dickie, who was beaten by Johnstone after five minutes play. The Rangers for a time were unsettled, and the homesters forced the pace tough Drummond and Smith were impregnable at back, and cleared dangerous shots frequently. After twenty minutes play the Rangers showed more confidence in themselves, and Campbell equalised the score. The remainder of the first half was well contested, both goal being assailed in turn, and one team being as good as the other on the general run of the play. A few minutes before halftime Howie from a fine pass by McPherson, scored the second goal for Killie with along swift shot. Halftime – Kilmarnock 2: Rangers 1. In the opening minutes of the second half the play on both sides lacked ‘go’ but it was not long until the Rangers showed up in their usual finished style, and after Craig had several times saved in brilliant fashion Alick Smith scored the second goal for the visitors. There was yet 30 minutes to go, and both team struggled hard to gain supremacy. Latterly McPherson added the third goal for the Rangers with a stinging shot which struck the foot of one of the uprights and swirled into the net, deceiving the Killie custodian, who had no chance of saving. The home team thereafter fell off tremendously, and Hamilton scored the fourth goal with one of the best shot of the game. Final result – Rangers 4: Kilmarnock 2. The drawing at the gate amounted to £230, and the stands realised fully £60
