Match Trivia
Whatever may be said of the Rugby Park team, it is patent they never do himself or herself justice when opposed to the Rangers at home. Saturday proved no exception to the rule, for never at any time did they settle to decent play against earnest opponents short of several of the ordinary members of the team. The first goal came after five minutes play from a corner, which Livingstone headed through. For the next half-hour the pace was hot, but the Rangers always held the upper hand, method being marked in all their doings. Kilmarnock were certainly not idle, but with Young too impetuous at centre forward a lot of the work by the half-backs was lost many good chances being thrown away by over anxiety. In the second half much the same conditions prevailed with the exception that a couple of ‘dead certs’ were thrown away by the Rugby Park representatives. Temper also played a prominent part in the proceedings, and with the referee a little unfortunate in some decisions the spectators were kept in a thrill of excitement. The second goal was scored by Alex Smith. The Rangers played capital football, a fine understanding being noticeable between the forwards and the half-backs. Newbigging was never thoroughly tested. Law and Craig proved a couple of fine backs, the latter being tip-top. The same conditions were seen in the half-back line, all three being grand workers, and very effective. The left wing was sprightly and combined splendidly, while Campbell and slightly the better of Anderson. Livingstone was also good, and McDonald had an easy mission against McCallum. Young has done better for Kilmarnock, although he can be excused for the goals. Mitchell shared back honours with Craig, while at half-back Wilson alone exhibited his usual game. The forwards were dispirited, and of a poor lot Armour seemed best. Templeton did not get too much to do, and spoiled his play by losing his temper
