Match Trivia
Rangers won this game without exerting themselves unduly. With them, it was a case of goal scoring made easy. Kinnear placed them ahead eight minutes after the start, Venters got another in 25 minutes, and Macaulay made the total three 17 minutes after the interval. Later on, Macaulay demonstrated how not to take a penalty kick by shooting almost directly at Brown, who easily cleared. All the goals were well taken at close range and gave the Killie goalkeeper little chance to save. In direct contract, the home forward simply did no know where the goal lay. They had as many scoring chances as their opponents, but the manner in which they fritted about the goal area simply played into the feet of Simpson and his mates, with the result that checkmate was easy. Only twice in the game did the downfall of Dawsons charge seem likely. Once, Thomson shot against the crossbar, and another time, Simpson turned away a ball from Robertson on the line with Dawson beaten. Rangers positional play in defence was always in evidence and generally too much for the opposition. Simpson was at his best, and more often on the ball than any player afield. While the Light blues forward play never reached great heights, they mad the most of their chances. Turnbull, on the right wing, was most prominent. Kilmarnocks best men were Brown, Lesslie, McClure and Ross. McClure kept a close watch on Smith. Beattie was the only home forward to impress, but I have seen him in better fettle. On the whole, a game that fell much below the standard of Kilmarnock-Rangers encounters. The usual fire was appreciably absent. Macaulay missed a 85th minute penalty
