Match Trivia
Five minutes before the close of their League encounter last night at Kilmarnock the Rangers snatched the winning goal. They were very fortunate to do so, for prior to that the Rugby Park fellows had much the better of the argument. But the Fates were not too kind to ‘Auld Killie’. In the first three minutes, when facing a rainstorm, they had three glorious tries turned down more by luck than good guidance. Five minutes later Morton got away to cross a ball, which Hansen promptly put through. Thereafter, Kilmarnock did a lot of pressure, but Robb was safe. Much noise was caused through the referee’s failure to grant a ‘penalty’ when the crowd alleged that Manderson fisted out. Nearing the interval both goals underwent narrow escapes, but the defences prevailed. From the outset of the second half the teams went at it hammer and tongs. In the first five minutes Jackson ought to have beaten Robb, but the equaliser wasn’t long delayed; McCandless missed his kick and Culley dashed in to do the trick. Despite the treacherous state of the ground the pace never slackened. None of the players spared himself. Just when a division of the spoils seemed likely, Cairns saw a loophole and sneaked the winning goal. Rangers were never happy in their work. They were leg-weary, whereas Kilmarnock played one of their best games, and were value a draw. Robb, Manderson, Meiklejohn, Hansen and Cairns were the ‘prominents’ in the Ibrox team. Kilmarnock side none did better than Hood, Gibson, Goldie, Smith, Culley and McPhail.
