Match Trivia

This undecided Scottish tie was played on the ground of the St Mirren at Westmarch Paisley; there would be about 5000 spectators present. The preliminary touch was given by Brodie on behalf of the Kilmarnock. For a few minutes the ball was kept travelling along without anything of special note accruing. On this a change was brought about by a good run on the past of McPherson and H McCreadie. Their work almost came off, as it was with some difficulty that Henderson got the danger cleared back, he having on two occasions to use his hands. Bur the Rangers were forcing the play, and soon their pressure told, as a shot from Henderson in close quarters came off, the Henderson of the Kilmarnock team missing his aim. A most creditable effort was made by McEvoy and Kelvin. Both these men were causing considerable anxiety to Hodge and Dunbar from their tricky play and close shooting. From a tremulous save by Marshall the Rangers got away, and their runs, which was well carried out, was closed by Kerr driving the ball against the Kilmarnock uprights. Coming back into play, the ball was driven well down the field by Paterson. This led to the Kilmarnock lads again swarming in front of Hodge, and in the midst of the scrimmage McPherson of the Ayrshire team, put on a goal. The score was now one each. The play was eagerly resumed. A fine dodging run by J McPherson was stopped by Hunter, and then a long accurate shot by Tannahill, kept up the excitement of the game, though from both attempts noting practical resulted. Still the Kilmarnock team was pleasing their numerous friends on the ground from their taking, dashing style of play, and a well-deserved cheer greeted the performance of Kelvin, who beat Haddow for the second time. At the interval Kilmarnock led by 2 to 1. The opening of the second half witnessed the Rangers making an attack of ten minutes duration, but which went for nothing. Of course it must be stated that the Kilmarnock men were defending gamely. Hunter and Orr lay close together, kicking back and blocking, whilst Campbell, Johnston and Paterson gave excellent support, and they were kept busy, for Kerr, H McCreadie and J McPherson had often the ball amongst them. A break away by McAvoy and Brodie resulted in Haddow getting a bit of the pressure, and he had to use his hands to turn away a swift shot by Tannahill. This was followed by a free kick to the Ayrshire men. It was nullified by Dunbar, and a strong kick by Mitchell again placed the Rangers near the Kilmarnock goal. From this H McCreadie made a pass, which was intercepted by Henderson, who beat is namesake between the posts. The teams were now once more on level terms. The score did not long remain thus. In rapid succession the Rangers got two corners, and from the second, well placed by Kerr, John McPherson headed the ball through, placing the Rangers in the ascendancy. There was now considerable enthusiasm amongst the followers of the Rangers, the Glasgow men being urged to put the result beyond doubt. No further scoring however took place, despite the creditable efforts made by Kilmarnock, as time drew nigh. The match therefore ended – Rangers 3 goals: Kilmarnock 2 goals.
