In the opening stages of the Kilmarnock-Rangers game at Rugby Park it looked as though Kilmarnock was to suffer overwhelming disaster. Rangers st once laid siege to the home goal, and within eight minutes Henderson had scored from a nice cross by Alan Morton, and five minutes later Cairns had given the visitors a two-goal lead. But Kilmarnock then showed dash and vim, and midway in the half they reduced their rivals lead, a well-placed cross by Lyner being netted by Jackson. From that point until the close if the game Rangers no longer predominated in play. In the second half especially, Kilmarnock did more of the attacking, though Rangers’ periodic breakaway the more dangerous. Rangers had to exert themselves fully to be able to squeeze through with a goal lead. Their display in the first half-hour of the game was brilliant, but after Kilmarnock had properly settled down the visitors had not, the same opportunity for showing off their points. The finishing of both teams was weak, and despite the strenuous nature of the contest neither custodian was called on to handle a really difficult shot. Henderson was a special sinner in respect of faulty shooting and bungled several perfect crosses from Morton. The passing of the Rangers’ team was markedly superior to that of the home lot, whose general play was not nearly open enough. Nevertheless, on yesterday’s display they proved that they were not second-ratters. Of the Kilmarnock forwards Jackson, Smith and Lyner were best. Goldie excelled at half-back, and both Hutton and Marshall were resolute in defence. Morton, Cairns and Cunningham were the best of the Rangers forwards, Muirhead and Dixon shone at half-back, while Reid and Jamieson of the reserves both played a fine game at back.
