Match Trivia
Thanks, Kilmarnock for giving the small crowd at Rugby Park something to enthuse over in the later stages of the game. Each side scored once in a dull first half, McPhail for Rangers from a cross by Waddell, and Gillespie for Kilmarnock from excellent service by Celt Calum McDonald. From then on, play was even, and the game looked like bring a draw until Gillespie gave Kilmarnock the lead twenty-five minutes after the turn. The applause had barely subsided when Gallacher worked his way into the penalty-box and beat Jenkins for a third time. This was an eye-opener for the Light Blues, who failed to launch their expected blitzkrieg in a late effort to save the game. Rangers fell far short of form and were beaten by a team that could take its chances. Calum McDonald served his mates for the night well, and others who contributed largely to Killies success were Hunter, Stewart and Gillespie an opportunist. What of Rangers? Jenkins was blameless, Woodburn was sound in the middle, but McPhail was seldom in the picture. He missed a penalty kick in the last minute. McPhail missed an 89th minute penalty
