Match Trivia
Distillery Benefit Match - The visit of the Scottish League champions to Windsor Park, Belfast attracted a crowd of 10,000 spectators. The Irish league had eight of the players who defeated the English League by a 3-2 margin this season. Three Scots were in the Irish side Carlyle, ex-Motherwell: Walker, brother of Tommy of Hearts, and Duffy, ex-Yoker Athletic. Shearer surprised Dawson with a low cross shot to put the Irishmen ahead after five minutes. The Scots had the better of play, but their shooting was not impressive. Only a smart save by Dawson at the expense of a corner prevented Simpson putting the ball into his own net. The Irish keeper was nearly surprised by McKillop who shot unexpectedly from 20 yards. He was fortunate to see the ball strike the post, after glancing off his fingers. For 20 minutes after the resumption the Irishmen had the better of the exchanges, but Dawsons clever work preventing the Irishmen from increasing their lead on several occasions. Rangers now took command, and only a great one-handed save at the expense of a corner, prevented Smith from beating Twoomey with a header from a well-timed cross from Main. The centre equalised 15 minutes from the close with a low shot from close range following clever work by Kinnear. Macaulay afterwards just missed with a great 20 yards drive, and Kelly in the following minute shot just outside with a low drive. Main in the closing minutes struck the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten, and Richardson cleared Smiths header from the rebound off the goal-line.
