Match Trivia

“Well done Caledonian !” was a frequent exclamation during the progress of the football match at Telford Street Park last night, when the visiting team was the famed Glasgow Rangers. To the surprise of all the game turned out on both sides to be a delightful display of scientific football. It was very pleasing to the crowd that the local players had no small share in the exhibition, and surprised even their keenest supporters by the dashing and combined work. The Rangers are great favourites in Inverness, which they have frequently visited. They have never failed to give a finished display or to enhance their popularity. Few there were at the match yesterday who went away disappointed. Interest was sustained in the play from start to finish, and the pretty and effective way in which the ball was operated demonstrated the science which can be brought to the game. Fortunately the evening turned out an excellent one for the display. The Glasgow men were lucky in securing a penalty kick shortly after the commencement, and they easily converted it into a goal. But the success had no restraining effect on the local men any more than had the fame of some of the great players opposed to them. They fought every inch of ground, and Jackson and Sutherland, the Rangers backs, early had a taste of the dashing qualities of the Camersons, Glass, Todd and Wedderspoon. It was especially gratifying to observe how well the local men kept their places and this certainly aided them in their dashing forays. But Hamilton was giving the lead to his men, and after ‘Colin’ the goalkeeper of the Caledonian, had saved a stinging shot, the Rangers intrepid centre sent the ball into the net and secured a second goal. After this the Caledonian forwards displayed excellent tactics, combining with great care and repeatedly beating Jackson and Sutherland. The latter, by the way, hails from Golspie. Wedderspoon’s play on the left was conspicuous for its dash and he made an excellent attempt to score. After an exciting attack, Caledonian emerged from a assault successfully, J Cameron securing a goal the roughly deserved. As the fight went on the strength of the Caledonian back division was often seen. Fotheringham defended with great power, often averting danger, which was ever present when speedy Hamilton, McColl, or Smith was on the ball. MacLeod, the other Caledonian back, also played with great confidence, and gave every promise of becoming a capable back. The halves were not one whit behind. Grant, Fraser and MacLennan proved a capable trio, and little fault could be found with their work. There was not an uninteresting moment, perhaps from the fact that the game was so evenly contested. Hamilton had a try which nearly proved a ‘buster’ to the Caledonian goalkeeper, who came down to Mother Earth. But the ball was cleared, and the Caledonian had fairly hard lines in not being equal in points at half-time, the Rangers leading by one. It might be thought in the first period that the Rangers were not over-straining themselves. They certainly did not play with the vigour characteristic of the Aberdeen League team last week. As the second period advanced and Caledonian were excelling themselves in combined work, the Rangers worked to more purpose. MacLeod was prominent in the Inverness defence, and George Cameron, who never wearied in playing well, gave the cue to Glass, who sent a stinging shot to Sinclair, which he smartly saved. Later on Glass had a beautiful ‘header’, which nearly reached the net, and the siege was not raised until Hamilton, with deer-like speed, changed the scene of operation, and nearly scored. The point came later on, the whole front rank of the Rangers moving with great freedom, and ultimately scoring The players seemed to delight in fine tactics, and the dodging about with the ball, especially by the strangers was masterly. Strenuous efforts by the local men, who played with great coolness and method, brought them within the precincts of the Rangers goal. Almost all the front line had tries for the goal, and no less than four corners were granted to Caledonian. Rarely had the front line of the Caledonian showed such fine passing play. Although the Rangers backs were not showing brilliant play, Caledonian were unable to score. Despite that omission, their fine play was admired, and if any fault could be found it was that the local halves lay back too far and did not push home the attack, or snatch a timely opening when the forwards had shot and the ball was sent out. The Caledonian were at least value for another goal. The contest went on on pleasant lines, and from superior play at goal, McColl put on another point for the Rangers. Like the others, it was well deserved. Till the close, play was interesting, and a delightful game ended in a win for the visitors by 4 goals to 1. The result was not quite a true criterion of the run of the play. All were pleased with the manner in which the Caledonian team played. Although some of the players individually were more prominent, the eleven did remarkably well, and deserved to be congratulated on the display which they gave against such well-known footballers
