Match Trivia
On our arrival in Chicago, we were entertained to lunch by the St Andrew’s Society. Then we were presented with the Freedom of the City. Mayor Big Bill Thompson preformed the ceremony. The Mayor, who expressed himself as being keenly interested in our tour, demonstrated that he could say nice things – even to Scots. We spent quite an enjoyable time with him and the other civic heads. We visited the Old Folks home and got to the ground for a ‘six-forty-five’ kick-off in very wet weather. In the circumstances it is not surprising that the attendance was only moderate. Our fellows got down to their work early, and Andrew Cunningham scored in the fifth minute. Cuthbert, Chicago’s inside left, equalised a quarter of an hour later. We were always the better side, and Bob McPhail took us ahead before the interval. Turned round, the rain ceased, and Chicago’s All-Star combine put up quite a good game. Marshall, however, took us further ahead, and McPhail, after running brilliantly through the defence, brought out our fourth and last goal. In appraising the value of this performance, it should be remembered that it was ‘three-thirty’ in the afternoon before we reached the big canning city, and to get there we travelled eighteen miles over the thousand. Hjulian, who was with the Celtic, you may remember kept a good goal, but the star of Chicago’s all-star side was undoubtedly Cuthbert
The Glasgow Rangers soccer champions of Scotland defeated an all star Chicago aggregation on Soldiers’ field yesterday in a twilight game by 4 to 1. The fine team work of the visitors proved too much for the locals. Threats of rain kept the attendance down. Fairly even play marked the first half, though it ended with the Rangers on top 2 to 1. Excellent passing enabled Cunningham, inside right to score the first goal for the Rangers. Shortly after Cuthbert headed the ball into the net to tie the score for Chicago, and that ended the tallying for the locals. McPhail, inside left, put the finishing touch on a concerted attacked to make the score, 2 to 1 in favour of the Rangers just before half-time. Glasgow added two goals in the last half. Shortly after the session opened the ball was passed down the field with machine like precision and Marshall booted it in the net. McPhail added the final score after 33 minutes of play when he made a nice solo run to the 20 yard line, from where he drove the ball into the net
