Match Trivia

At full strength, to get both points at Easter Road seemed an easy thing for Rangers, and had they got full value for their outfield play they should have beaten the Hibs by a much larger margin. their strength lay forward, where the inside trio, Gordon, McLean and Cunningham scintillated. They were up against a stone-wall Easter Road defence, who were out for spoiling the Ibrox men at every turn. And they succeeded wonderfully well. In nine minutes Archibald, after cleverly beating Grosert and Paterson, went on to score the opening point. While the Rangers’ front line was making things lively with clever work, the same could hardly be said of the Hibs quintette. One of the best of that lot was Neave, the Hearts left-winger, who with a green jersey on, was making occasional inroads towards Hempsey. The latter was, however, seldom severely tested. It was Neave who got the equaliser, just on half-time , but had the referee, prior to the goal being scored, pulled up Williams for offside he would have been doing his duty. After a short breather the Ibrox men gave strong evidence of a desire to make the issue clear, Gordon in particular making strong effort to press the leather home, and after a time he succeeded, sending in a beautiful left-foot grounder when least expected, and it caught the Hibs defenders unawares. This ended the scoring, but not the pressure. Both sides strove hard, and just on time the Hibs made a desperate throw to snatch a point, but failed. Rangers’ defence has been seen to better advantage, both Blair and Manderson at times missing their kicks. Of the halves Dixon bore off the palm, and Cunningham and Gordon were the master minds of the attack. Hibs’ backs played strongly, with McGinnigle the more reliable, and Shaw and Neave were the stars of the half-back and forward lines respectively.
