Match Trivia

Willie Smith Benefit Match, In these days a benefit match serves two purposes. It enables recognition to be made of good service in a player, and it affords clubs an opportunity of making experiments which cannot be risked in competitive games. In neither of these respects was the Willie Smith benefit a great success. Not more than 1500 spectators were present at Easter Road, and none of the men of trial did anything to go into raptures over. The Englishman tried by Rangers at centre forward managed to get a goal, but the chance was made for him by Goodwin, and apart from that he was only passably good. Perhaps the best ting the game revealed from the Rangers’ point of view was that Cairns won’t likely let them down in the event of his services being required for the League team. He was the best of the inside men, and shared with Paterson the honours of the line. The latter scored the second goal. It came ten minutes behind the first, which was scored just on the call of half-time. With none of the men on trial doing particular well, and the regular hands taking things quietly, the game was lacking in thrills. Rangers did most of the aggressive work, and deserved their win. Wood was best for the Hibs’ forwards; the others gave a poor response to his lead. In defence the team was more sound and Paddy Callaghan made quite a useful goalkeeper in the emergency.
