Match Trivia

A considerable number of spectators turned out to witness this match at Easter Road Edinburgh, which was generally expected to be a pretty hard one, but as the result showed was after all a very one sides effort. With two exception the charity cup team of the Rangers was present and the two vacancies were filled with good men; but those of the Hibernian were also all in there places being taken by second eleven men and the whole team seemed to be out of form. During the first five minutes the play was pretty equal. A corner was secured by the Rangers but although well centred the home team cleared their lines and carried the ball to the other end, but it was quickly taken away again and a long shot from the centre by Struthers gave the visitors their first goal. Scarcely two minutes had elapsed when the Hibernian had to crowd round their fortress again ‘hand’ having been given against them. The kick judiciously given by one of the backs and neatly headed in by Smith. This was followed by a run down on the left by the visitors. Hill having got pretty well down passed the ball to Pringle on the right who sent it straight for goal ensuring the keeper to throw it out. Struthers here came to the front and shot the third goal for his side. The home men now had to waken up a bit and for the next few minutes their play was very lively and several runs were made to the other end of the field but these were generally brought to nothing by T Vallance easily sending the ball to the centre of the field. Eventually the Rangers got down again to their old position and after some hot play in which Docherty did his best to save his post, Devlin headed the ball in for the fourth time. In a few minutes more Struthers had shot goal No.5; but after that the Hibernian made a determined assault on their opponents goal. The struggle, which lasted for a few minutes, ended in Rourke heading the ball in amid cheers. Before half time however Struthers had added another goal to the Rangers score making the game stand 6 goals to one. With a change of ends the home team played downhill and at once made an attack on the visitors goal. A good chance for scoring was lost by Lee who in shooting for goal sent the ball to the wrong side of the crossbar. The Rangers at once retaliated and in a very short time Hill and Struthers had scored goals No.7 and 8, while a run up the right forwards ended in Gillespie who had taken good position (and sent A Vallance into goal) scoring goal No.9. The Hibernian by this time had no hope of equalising matters but they played very pluckily and not without some encouraging runs. Out of a scrimmage in front of the Rangers goal G Byrne was successful in scoring and another determined and sustained attack at that end resulted in Lee making a good effort that just went bye. Shortly before time was called the Hibernian were once more down on the visitor’s stronghold when they secured a corner. Lee took the kick, which was headed well out by Devlin, but McKernan took a long shot and scored. The match thus ended in a win for the visitors by nine goals to three. The play on the part of the Rangers was very good and the forwards showed some of the best points of the game
