Match Trivia
The first of the interchanges between these teams took place at Easter Road, Edinburgh, in summer-like weather, over 10,000 spectators being present. The Rangers opened the game briskly, but the Hibernian retaliated in grand style, and both goals had narrow escapes. The game became fast and exciting, and some pretty passing was witnessed on both sides. After the game was 35 minutes old Gemmell opened the scoring for the Hibernian. Five minutes later he put the home team two up. This second reverse roused the Rangers, and they set themselves the task of reducing the score, and by beautiful combination Miller got clear away and scored just as halftime was called. The teams crossed over with the home side leading by two goals to one. The game was hardly a minute and a half old when the Light Blues by a little bit of luck equalised, Smith popping the ball into the net after McCall had failed to hold a hard shot from Miller. The game became a give-and-take nature, each side being very dangerous when they broke away. One of the rushes by the Hibernian forwards ended in Gemmell again scoring. The Rangers were showing prettier football than their opponents, and from some splendid passing on the right wing Hamilton slipped the ball past McCall, equalising. In the last minute of the game Robertson seized Campbell inside the penalty line and tried to throw him. For this the Rangers were granted a penalty, Neil took the place and despite a grand effort by McCall the ball went into the net. Result – Rangers 4 goals: Hibernian 3 goals.
