Match Trivia

If you were to ask whether it was Rangers’ weakness or Hibernian’s strength that accounted for the result at Easter Road I would say – “A bit of both”. Hibs played with great determination and rose a good bit above themselves, but these could be no mistaking the fact that the Ibrox lot were not at their best. Taking things as we found them, a draw was the right result to a game which a crowd of 21,000 thoroughly enjoyed. The best feature of it was the sterling play of Hibs defenders. I have nothing but praise for Blyth, Wilkinson and Urquhart, but the man most entitled to have bouquets showered upon him was undoubtedly Watson. He was the hero of the match. Hibs forwards were hard grafters all the time – that is all that cane be said of them. Flucker has often been seen to better advantage. Nor were the Ibrox forwards a great company, though occasionally they did show some decent football. The men who mattered most on the Rangers’ side were Brown and Meiklejohn. The wing man was the soundest and most artistic half-back on view. The better back was McDonald. Mason improved as time went on, by the started so shakily that there must have been misgivings in the Ibrox camp. Like Blyth, Dawson seized every opportunity of distinguishing himself. Hibs made a spirited start, but three early corners brought them nothing. Rangers first big effort came when Meiklejohn rammed in the ball so hard from a free kick that Blyth’s fingers must have tingled as he stopped it. Before the interval we had a shot from Marshall that struck the crossbar and one from Walls that produced a good save by Dawson. The second half followed the lines of the first, neither side being able to claim any material advantage. Towards the end, however Rangers put in a bit extra in an effort to pull off a win. They nearly managed a goal one time; that was when Urquhart diverted a hard shot for a corner; but in the main these stubborn Hibernian defenders – gallant fellow all – kept a firm grip, and the Easter Road forwards were always ready to take a hand in the game. In the closing minutes Dawson saved well when Flucker looked like getting home
