Match Trivia
These clubs met yesterday at Easter Road Edinburgh in a friendly encounter before a holiday crowd of some 6000. Runs and Counter-runs characterised the play of the first 15 minutes. Both goals were visited more than once and Haddow was twice in as many minutes called on to save difficult shots. Gray sent in a stinger, which Donnelly cleverly held. Play slackened but only for a moment. The Rangers commenced a spirited attack, but the defence was alert and active. They however, contrived to confine play for fully five minutes to the home ground until Hibs got away, and Drummond had some difficultly in stopping their dangerous rush. Next moment Rangers were storming Donnelly charge, which had a narrow escape, a corner falling to visitors. From this Hibs got down again, and Martin sent in a low shot, giving Haddow another opportunity of exhibiting his saving qualities. As the outcome of a steady but persistent attack by Rangers, Smith shot over the bar. A period of very even play was at length broken. Murray fixed on about midfield, and having the halfs and Drummond on the pace shot in. Haddow did his best, but failed to stop the shot. This the first goal was scored forty minutes from start. A couple of minutes after Rangers drew level, Boyd and Gray rushing the ball through. Just before the whistle sounded Boyd terminated a steady attack in which Donnelly appeared to advantage by beating the Hibs goalkeeper with a strong low shot. Halftime result :- Rangers 2 goals; Hibernian 1 goal. Fully five minutes after the change of ends Drummond ran out to meet a ball and missed his kick, Martin was lying handy and passed to Murray who screwed in a low shot which beat Haddow. After Crawford had stopped a dangerous try, Rangers got down and McCreadie had hard lines in not scoring as difficult ball from him striking the post and rebounding into play. Five minutes after Hibs came down in a body, and gathering round Haddow rushed the ball through, thus gaining the lead. Hibs were now having rather the best of the play. In the course of a spirited attack they forced a couple of corners. A period of open play, generally in favour of visitors followed. A couple of corners fell in succession to the Rangers. McCreadie kicked both, and from the second Smith passed the ball through, matters again being level. As the last few minutes of the match proceeded the excitement became intense. Rangers made a strong attack, but the ball was sent past close to the post. The visitors goal also had a narrow escape. A tough struggle between Drummond and Murray for possession resulted in the Hibs man getting in a low shot, which passed along in front of Rangers goal. Smith was lying handy and averted the danger. A hard match ended in a draw. Final result :- Rangers 3 goals; Hibernian 3 goals
