Match Trivia

The above clubs met at Easter Road Edinburgh, in a friendly fixture for the holiday. The Rangers started, but the home team got possession, and put the visitors goal in a state of siege. With the aid of his backs McLeod managed to keep his lines intact. Thomson transferred play to Hibernian territory by a fine run, but the Rangers only made one serious attack on the home defence, which was unsuccessful. On the return journey the Hibernians were rewarded by a foul kick in the front of their opponent’s goal. Murphy took the kick but sent the ball skywards. Shortly after the Rangers met with a like success, when they were awarded a foul kick in front of McCall. The visitors ho had a stiff breeze in their favour ought to have made far more progress than they did. At it was the Hibernian defence was never really tried. Not long after, from a fine combined forward run P Murray scored the first goal for the ground team. Scarcely had the ball been centred before the Irishmen were again down upon McLeod, but A Smith brought relief by a fine dribble. The Rangers were awarded a free kick in front of McCall again, but failed to equalise. The Glasgow team now began to press, but the Hibernians defence was good, and on to the end of this half the game was well contested, the Rangers having slightly the best of matters. Halftime result – Hibernian 1 goal: Rangers 0. With the wind in their favour during the second half, Hibernians had matters nearly all their own way. The right-wingers of the home team were completely outplaying their opponents, and if it had not been for the magnificent defence by Drummond and Smith the Hibernian score would have been greatly increased. As it was about 20 minutes after the start, from a foul kick in front of McLeod, Kennedy scored the second goal. Slack play on the part of McLeod allowed Murray to add to the already too large score. Not long after this the Rangers forward line pulled together and carried the ball to the other end. Muir shot across, and Stewart netted the first goal for the Rangers. The visitors played more together after this, and the game was very evenly contested. Result – Hibernian 3 goals: Rangers 1 goal.
