Match Trivia

There were all the elements of a good game at Easter Road – bar goals. Neither set of forwards showed any real ability at close quarters. Even with Manderson installed at centre-forward to give the necessary push to the line, the Rangers’ lot failed when it came to driving home their attack. They ought to have been a goal ahead in the opening minutes, but even a penalty kick brought them nothing Scott Duncan drove straight at McManus. Bennett, Lawson and Pursell got in the only shots worth mentioning. For a time the Hibernian relied a lot on their defence, where Gordon and Dornan did particularly fine work, but towards the interval their forwards took their proper part in the game, and Campbell and Kilpatrick had good tries. In the second half there were one or two ‘near things’, the most noteworthy being when a slip by Law let Kilpatrick through to shoot against Hempsey, and then to send the rebound over the bar. On the other hand, McManus was lucky to be right in the way of a shot by Bennett, and doubly lucky to find the bar come to his rescue after Manderson had him beaten. Hibernian got a point out of the game mainly because of the splendid spoiling work of their half-backs, coupled with excellent play by Dornan and McManus. No man afield did better than Gordon – a wonderful fellow considering his years at the game. Blair was the outstanding player in the Rangers’ rear; Pursell excelled at half-back; and Bennett and Lawson showed up well in front. Manderson began well, but over-eagerness and the too-devoted attention of Paterson proved too much for him.
