Match Trivia
The return League match between these clubs took place at Easter Road on Saturday in presence of about 9000 spectators. Both teams were at their advertised strength, Martin and Kennedy making their re-appearance in the Hibs team. Kennedy won the toss, and elected to play up the hill in the first half, Hamilton kicking off, and at once making a lot of headway through his own efforts. For a time however, the Hibs defence proved fairly good, but the dash and altogether superior methods of the Rangers soon told upon the defenders, who to the surprise of a large section of the crowd, got into a static of panic, and made mistakes at every turn, losing their places and becoming so mixed up that it was no easy task for the game to be followed in the usual way. Such it was held accounted for the referee failing to penalise Hamilton for offside when he scored the Rangers first goal. The Hibs were unsuccessful in their appeal, and their play did not improve, the result being that after a while Hamilton again scored, and Hyslop brought the Rangers lead to 3-0 at halftime. As the Hibs had given so poor a display in the first half, it was some consolation to their followers to see them play a much harder game in the second half opened. But just when they were holding out hope of making the game more equally contested their efforts were discounted through the referee regarding a charge by Martin as a bit of rough play, and disallowing the goal which he scored so cleverly. Despite this further reverse of fortune the Hibs played up still a good deal better, and Martin tried very hard to get past the opposing backs. It was all to no purpose, however for the Rangers after that escape were not disposed to give their opponenets another chance, and as the Hibs relapsed into their former state, the Rangers again brightened up, Hamilton and A Smith adding goals, and thereby placing the result out of doubt quarter of an hour before the finish, the result being – Rangers 5 goals: Hibs 0.
