Match Trivia

To the Rangers has fallen the honour of inflicting the first League defeat on the Hearts at Tynecastle this season, but the credit attaching to its somewhat lessened by the weakened state of the Hearts team and by the very lucky nature of the victory. McLaren and Charles Thomson were unable to turn out, the captain still being sore from his hurts in the Celtic game, when he collided with his club mate Reid. Philip has good games at half to his credit, but Henderson doesn’t inspire confidence. The game was all over was disappointing and one was left wondering how the Rangers had done so well this season. They had the advantage of the opening stages, and the left wing was responsible for some pretty football, but that was not a lasting nor a conspicuous phase of the game. The Hearts had nearly evened matters on play by halftime, and their superiority in the second half justified, at the very least a draw. Even Ibrox could scarcely have complained of injustice if the score had been the other way. To a certain extent the Hearts beat themselves. Granted a penalty in the second half, they only used it to make the opening for the Rangers second goal – the goal that won the match. There was only one man in the forward line who was dangerous at close quarters, and he usually got too much to do when it game to shooting. The team contained two stars – Walker and Dickson. Walker has been asked to carry a forward line on his back before now, and it was consequently not a new experience for him. In the making of chances he could not have been improved on. Time and again Mitchell and Colombe got the benefit of his masterly dribbling and placing, but they never rose to the occasion. Reynolds and Dargue were spasmodically good, and if the former got the goal for his side, it can be said that Walker’s pacing of the ball was responsible for it. Dickson dominated the situation behind, defending well enough to make up for Collin’s lack of form, and finding time to put in a good deal of attacking. In fact, he figured in nearly all the offensive movements of the left, and it was a sign of the fecklessness of the other when he and Walker attempted together to pull of a goal near the finish. Dickson, as a wholehearted player, is a model to most footballers. Henderson’s placing was rather vague, but otherwise he was fairly good, if scarcely so delightfully irresponsible as usual. Allan saved splendidly, and Reid had his moments of good lay, but the comparative success of the defence was to a certain extent due to the weak opposing forward play. But for Kyle’s occasional cleverness the line was poor, their one good point being their readiness to shoot. Gordon stood out among the half-backs, and the backs were fair
