Fine weather favoured the meeting of these clubs at Tynecastle, Edinburgh. The attendance numbered about 10,000 spectators. The Hearts opened the play against the wind and considering their weakened team, played surprisingly well, and if they could not get near Sinclair they showed some good play in the open. ‘Dame Fortune’ however failed to smile on the ‘Maroons’ and a breakaway by the Light Blues ended in A Smith scoring from a corner well placed by Walker. After this reverse the Hearts played up in plucky fashion, but they met a stubborn defence, and Sinclair was never really tested. A bad miss by Collins left the goal at the mercy of Walker, and the ex-Hearts played made no mistake by placing the Rangers two up. In the succeeding play the Hearts were given several good chances, but they spoiled their efforts by weakness in front of goal. Halftime – Rangers 2 goals: Heart of Midlothian 0. On resuming the Hearts opened promisingly, and Moran had a good try, Sinclair conceding a corner. The Hearts were now shaping better, but never looked like improving their position, the defence being always too strong for the attack. When the Rangers forward got away they always proved dangerous lot, and in one of their raids Speedie scored the luckiest of goals, the ball finding its way through quite a dozen players, and then glancing off Key’s foot out of Philip’s reach. Shortly afterwards ‘Johnny’ Walker headed through a fourth goal, and just before the end Hamilton added another. Result – Rangers 5: Heart of Midlothian 0.
