Match Trivia

Played at Tynecastle, Edinburgh the weather was fine, though the wind blew rather strong across the field. There was a large attendance. In the Hearts team there was no change, but in the Rangers combination Gibson went centre halfback, while Barker last year’s forward played right. In the forwards rank Russell and Stewart played for the first time this season. McLaren started the ball for the Hearts, and Michael and Chambers got into the Rangers ground where Begbie also gave assistance, but the ball was neatly stopped by the halfback division, and the Rangers then had a turn. Play was very fast, the ball going from end to end, and on one occasion Oswald, who sent in a shot, narrowly missed scoring. The Hearts cleared, and for a few minutes Fairbairn and party had a warm game. The Hearts however missed their chance, and a foul given against them, the Rangers cleared, bur only for a moment, as Michael made a fine attempt, but owing to the cross wind failed to score. The Rangers forwards got away, and with a nice passing cleared all obstacles, but McCartney got the ball, and then the Hearts made an attack at the other end. In the game that followed the Rangers forwards had decidedly the best of matters, and in this they were greatly assisted by Drummond, who was playing a capital game. The hearts got off, and after a strong attack, McLaren sent the ball into the net, but it was brought back, much to the disgust of the home supporters. A foul against the Hearts looked dangerous, but the ball was sent over the bar. The Game continued open and neither goal was endangered. The Hearts had a long spell at the Rangers end, and after many futile attempts McLaren was instrumental in getting the first goal for the Hearts. A capital rush by McLaren and Walker was well stopped by Drummond, and then with the ball at midfield, the whistle blew. After crossing over the Hearts made a determined attack, and Russell who had a fine chance, sent the ball out of play. The Rangers then gave the home back division considerable trouble, but Fairbairn who was ably assisted, made a capital defence. The Hearts cleared and got don the field, and on more than one occasion looked like scoring, but their attempts were fruitless, and their passing play could have been improved upon. The game became faster, and both teams in turn had good chances, but failed to take advantage of them. At length the Rangers, after a strong attack, secured an opening, and Oswald equalised. Shortly afterwards during a scramble in front of the Hearts posts a second goal fell to the Rangers. Till the finish the game was a hard one, but no further scoring took place. Result – Rangers 2 goals: Heart of Midlothian 1 goal.
