Match Trivia
The first League match between these clubs and the first played in Edinburgh took place at Tynecastle before close upon 17,000 spectators, the crowd being the largest which ever assembled at a League match in the city. The Rangers were without their two backs, Drummond and N Smith, but the Hearts team was at full strength. The weather was mild, with a slight breeze blowing across the field, while the pitch was in perfect order. From the outset the game was very fast, and 25 minutes passed ere a score took place, the Hearts leading off. R Walker got possession in a fine position and eluding Gibson, who was playing left back at the time, ran on and passed to Taylor who began a grand’s days work by scoring a fine goal, Dickie slipping in trying to save. Just a little afterwards Hamilton equalised through the ball dropping into the net off Wilkie’s back. Soon after the Hearts got in front of the Rangers goal, and while Dickie had left his charge to get rid of the ball Livingstone lost a golden opportunity by shooting widely over the bar. Not so Hamilton at the other end a little later, got getting free of all opponents he shot a second point for the Rangers, and gave the lead at halftime by 2 to 1. In the second half the game was magnificently contested: but the Rangers continued to have the pull, and Hamilton again scored. A penalty kick ten fell to the Hearts, which Livingstone successfully took, and at the finish the score was – Rangers 3: Hearts 2.
