Match Trivia

The Hearts run of luck was kept further a going at Tynecastle on Saturday, when with a team that included two players on trial and one of the reserve backs they drew against the full strength of the Rangers. In suggesting that the Hearts were somewhat lucky to finish equal we comfiest we would have done so with some hesitancy, but for the fact that our view coincided with the opinion of the principal Hearts officials, whose character is the fairness was reflected by his frank admission that the Rangers were the clever team, and that with the least bit of the ordinary share of fortune’s favours they might have won. It was a good game for an end of the season fixture, and gave a deal of satisfaction to the 5000 spectators. Nearing the end of the first half a quickly taken centre by R Walker was fastened on to by some of the other Hearts’ forwards, and Thomson got the ball past Dickie. Early in the second half A Smith after being cleverly baffled by Philip returned a hot one, which beat the Hearts’ goalkeeper. The Rangers back play was as unsteady as it was against the Hibs a fortnight ago, and had the Hearts forwards been in their cup-tie form the probability is that they might have scored oftener. When the mood did seize them, however the efforts of the Rangers backs were well supported by the forwards, who were a most dangerous lot all through, but were indefatigably chased by the Hearts backs, amongst whom D Baird again shone. Indeed it struck one forcibly that Campbell abandoned all hope of mastering the Hearts veteran, and preferred giving up the ball to being beaten by him. It only remains to be said, that of the two Dumfries recruits, Sloan centre half and Badenoch outside right, the latter gave the greater satisfaction, and so please the Tynecastle management that he is likely to become a permanency. Sloan a tall lean and active youth will be tried again before being finally pronounced upon.
