Match Trivia

Strong in every department Rangers were particularly well served by their inside forwards at Tynecastle. It was here that the difference between the teams was most marked. McLean and Cairns did all the scoring for Rangers, the centre claiming three of the goals, but Bowie was the pick of the lot, his leading-out work being a great factor in the success of his side. All over the Ibrox men made a distinctly good impression on the 15,000 spectators. The Hearts were plucky, and made sure that their opponents travelled all the way. There was an element of luck about McLean’s first goal, the ball coming to him within three minutes of the start, but the second point was thoroughly sound. Aitken put over an accurate centre, Cairns ramming the crossbar before the ball came out for McLean to score. More scoring would have been done had the Tynecastle defence not been thoroughly sound. Soldier Wilson played a strong game, and was ably partnered by Birrell, a sturdy little recruit from Fife. It was in combined forward play that the Hearts were really weak. Sinclair managed to get over some tip-top centres, one of which enabled Thomson to send in a hot shot to Hempsey. Still better was the effort by Sharp, who fairly shook the upright with a hard drive. Soon after the interval another of Aitken’s fine crosses resulted in Cairns adding to the Rangers’ total. The plucky play of the Hearts had it reward when McCulloch found Manderson at fault, and put on the best goal of the game. For a time the Tynecastle men figured as if they meant to make a game of it, but the job was too big for them. In the closing minutes Black effected a save from Cairns, only to find McLean catch the rebound and best him. Rangers were all good, but Bowie, Aitken, McLean, Dixon and Purcell should be singled out for special praise. The Hearts’ best were Black, Birrell, Sharp, Sinclair and Neave.
