Match Trivia

This was not so much a game as a scramble at Tynecastle. Rangers started by trying to play football but found it wouldn’t come off against a resolute Hearts’ side, every man on which got a bit above himself. Latterly it was the old story – Rangers rattled and reduced to the level of their opponents. It came as a relief to hear the final whistle, for in the hurly-burly of the second half tempers were ‘on tap’, not a few players got a word from the referee, and for ten minutes the Hearts had to fight away with nine men. John White and Williamson were carried off injured. In the circumstance the Tynecastle side came out of the game with great credit. They were lucky to escape defeat, however, for Wright fisted out a sure goal as cleanly as ever goalkeeper did, and the referee failed to observe the incident. The Ibrox men tried to persuade Mr Binnie into consulting his linesmen, but with no success. This ‘let-off’ occurred near the end of a fairly even first half. Rangers had been giving us the more methodical stuff, but the Hearts’ backs and half-backs did great spoiling work. Dand has never played better; the grip he kept on Morton and cairns had much to do with Rangers’ ineffectiveness. The Ibrox rear men, too were frequently hustled out of their game by the onslaughts of the Tynecastle forwards. Robb had to make a double punch onetime to get rid of a shot from Williamson. One of Willie White’s most troublesome ones came from Henderson early in the second half. The Ibrox centre was putting more zest into his work now. The Hearts’ goal had another narrow escape late in the game. Following a ‘free’. Archibald put the ball across in front, when a great chance of scoring presented itself. Later on, White had to throw himself on a ball from Henderson at the foot of a post. On the other hand, there might easily have been a counter at the Rangers’ end. From a sledgehammer drive by Coyle, the ball hit the crossbar and rebounded well out of the penalty-box. The force of the shot would almost have felled an ox! The spectators had any amount od excitement, but the game was far from a pretty one. Not a man on the Rangers’ side stood out above his fellows. Manderson and McCandless were good without being at all brilliant. Dixon and Muirhead please best in the middle, and Archibald and Carins were the pick of the forwards. On the showing of this contest the Hearts have discovered a great pair of backs in their old middlemen – Coyle and Ramage. Nor was there any weakness at half-back, where Dand and Wright showed to particular advantage. Willie Wilson came out of his shell and was quite the most prominent forward. John White distributed the play well and came next in order of merit.
