Match Trivia
In the afternoon of yesterday these clubs played off their return League fixture in presence of about 15,000 spectators. Drummond train was late, and N Smith had to play for him, the teams otherwise being the same as usual. From the outset the keenest excitement prevailed over the teams struggle for the opening goal. Even play ruled during the first half hour, but at length Michael, who had been as irrepressible as ever, and had experienced hot a little hard lines had the distinction of scoring for the home team amidst deafening cheers. The Rangers tried hard to equalise, and once Hamilton looked like having a clear opening, but he kicked too hard, and Rennie easily saved. Before the latter had done so, Clark tripped Hamilton, and it was very fortunate indeed for the Hearts that the foul occurred a foot or so on the safe side of the penalty line. Up to halftime nothing further had been scored, and the Hearts resumed with a lead of 1 to 0. The pace in the second half was sustained right on till the end. Fort a long time it looked as if the Rangers were going to receive their fist defeat, and it was when the Hearts were beginning to feel a little too sure of victory that a temporary extra slackness in their at no time safe back play was taken advantage of by Hamilton to equalise a very keenly contested game ending in a draw of 1 goal each. The gate yielded £323 and the stands £65; total £388
