Match Trivia
A rearranged Hearts team that did not seen inclined to matters too seriously, and a Rangers team that overdid the fancy work at times and could not do it at all at others, were the two factors that made for a rather tame and spiritless game at Tynecastle. The opening play was promising. There was a nice understanding between Peddie and Wombwell, bustle from Axford, and the usual crafty play for Walker, while the outside right was good and bad by turns. Some of the Rangers combined work – halves and forwards joining – was beautiful to watch. Just in front of goal, however the inefficiency was glaring. Kivlichan and the others shot from too far out, and when the Hearts got near they could not score. Kyle and Smith were splendid in the open, but Kivlichan could do nothing with the latter’s centres, while McDonald, who was always in earnest, was about the most effective forward for a considerable part of the game. Peddie, clever at times was disinclined to exert himself, and Wombwell’s finishing was the weak part of his game. Walker had an afternoon off, and even he like Livingstone, missed his chance after a break through. The Rangers had the best of the game, but the home halves were strong, particularly Thomson, and it was as well, because Reid was not up to his usual form and missed his kick oftener than the Hearts’ supporters eared for. Allan could not be taxed with any mistakes. Stark was the outstanding player among the Rangers halves, and Jackson was much the better back. Newbigging, with little to do did it in a reassuring style. Smith scored for the Rangers towards the close
