Match Trivia

The return Scottish League engagement between these clubs was played at Tynecastle Edinburgh, before about 12,000 spectators. The Hearts kicked off, and at once forced a corner, which was fruitless. Then the Rangers had a look in and a low shot by Mackie was easily cleared by the Hearts custodian. The game veered round in favour of the Light Blues, and the ball went out to Donnachie, who sent across to Mackie, who with a fast low shot had the ball into the corner of the net out of McWattie’s reach. Following this reverse the Hearts played up in determined fashion, and Bell sent in a telling shot, which Watson had some difficulty in dealing with. At this stage the game was proceeding on fast line, and Bell again had another try, but this time the ball carried wide. This led up to an exciting rally in front of the Rangers goal, and twice Watson had to handle. Good work by Thomson kept the home forwards in close proximity to the visitors goal, and a grand centre by Wilson was badly returned by Fraser, who allowed Livingstone to get possession, and running in he gave Watson no chance to save thus equalising. After this the game quietened down considerably, and halftime arrived with the score 1 goal each. The Hearts on resuming pressed, and a long shot from Wilson caused Watson to handle. Mackie changed the venue, but the Rangers efforts were short lived, as the Hearts were soon again attacking, Wilson, Hunter and Bell doing the bulk of the work. A beautiful centre by the latter was nicely taken up by Wilson who beat Watson amid cheers. The Rangers made strenuous efforts to get on level terms, but they found in the Hearts a much superior lot, and time arrived without further scoring. Result – Heart of Midlothian 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. The gate drawings amounted to £262 14s 6d and £40 11s was taken at the stands.
