Match Trivia

Upward of 10,000 spectators saw the Rangers register a comparatively easy victory at Douglas Park yesterday. While they gain full points, it cannot be said that the form of the Light Blues was the least bit convincing. Indeed locally there was a comprehension that if the Accies had been favoured with a pivot, who could control the fast-going extreme men on either side of him, the result might have been different. Both sides showed up best in the first half. In that period there was good football, with Rangers always shaping as the more likely goal-getter. For a long time the ground team’s defence prevailed, but at last McLean fastened on the ball and beat Anderson with a fast grounder. In the second half the Accies opened brightly, and Mathie ought to have equalised with a perfect gift of an opportunity. Play was even until Manderson, from a free kick, scored a surprising goal. From this point the Accies, although they stood up gamely to their opponents, were a beaten lot. It came as no surprise when McLean near the close added a third goal for the Rangers. Hempsey was confident, and quite capable of performing the little asked of him. Walls was in brilliant form at half-back, and he and Dixon had much to do with with the domination which the Ibrox intermediate line exercised over the opposing attack. Archibald and McLean were the pick of the forwards. Gordon was good and bad by turns, and not up to his usual standard by any means. For the Accies Anderson was brilliant, and had many daring saves. The backs were all on a par, and have done better. Nimmo was grand at centre-half, and McAllister shone to advantage in the second portion. The attack was ragged and disjoined, and for the want of a capable centre never settled. Anderson was a sharp as a needle in his movements, but too individualistic. Mathie was quite the most aggressive forwards for the Hamilton team.
