Match Trivia

Rangers, by a grand first-half display, had this game well in hand at half-time. They served up a brand of football play in that period which had the Accies’ defenders all hot and bothered. McPhail was the master mind behind most of the aggressive movements, while Main and Kinnear had a field day against Wallace and Scott, who were very shaky. Rangers were never stretch in defence, where Simpson kept Wilson on a tight rein. Accies put up a poor fight and only Morgan and Thomson earned full marks. The forwards simply footered about. The home team had a grand chance to take the lead in the first minute. A miskick by Gray, who blinded by the sun, lost sight of the ball, enabled McNee to work clear and centre, but Wilson’s sot caused Dawson little concern. The sun was proving troublesome, and a bad miskick by Wallace ended in disaster for the Accies. Kinnear crossed accurately, and McPhail smashed an unsaveable shot into the roof of the net five minutes after the start. McPhail had on his shooting boots, and Morgan saved brilliantly another try from the inside left, while the goalkeeper again distinguished himself by turning aside a grand Kinnear shot. A brilliant 35-yard drive by Simpson was the next item od note, and Morgan did well to knuckle the ball over for a corner, which, however, brought Rangers their second goal, Morgan turning Main’s well-placed kick into net. This in 18 minutes. Rangers were playing fast and free football, and Accies’ defenders were in difficulties. It was well for Hamilton that Morgan was in good fettle. Morgan was beaten for the third time in 26 minutes by Kinnear, who got clen through to shoot into the net. Rangers’ grand covering up in defence was always apparent, and the Accies found scoring chances few and far between. The second half found Rangers back at their old stance in the Hamilton goal area, and Morgan saved brilliantly from Kinnear, while a Macaulay shot was diverted on to an upright. Rangers’ forward play lost its first-half sparkle while the Accies never looked like putting a better complexion on the score. As a result, the exchanges became rather drab and uninteresting. The home team had a penalty claim turned down and then forced a corner, but they never disclosed the guile necessary to overcome Simpson and Company. Smith scored a fourth goal for Rangers fourteen minutes from the end following a fine McPhail pass, and King reduced the leeway five minutes later. Smith scored a fifth goal for Rangers five minutes from the end
