Match Trivia

Candidly, I was disappointed with the display at Douglas Park, and more disappointed with Rangers than the less pretentious Academicals. True, the Light Blues showed a better conception of the game, but over the piece their efforts were of the spasmodic order. There was not that sustained brilliance usually associated with the Ibrox confederacy. I would go further and say that more than one position must be strengthened if the old traditions are to be maintained. While there was much scrappy play in the opening half this was, to a great extent, compensated for by the whole-hearted efforts of the players. Both defences were subjected to the severest pressure, and both keepers were frequently in action. Wright had the more difficult task, and he certainly enhanced his reputation by his confident handling of numerous danger-spelling balls. Yet the Lanarkshire lot were first to find the net, and it was the sequel to one of the few brilliant passages seen in the game. Allan initiated the move when he intercepted a ball meant for Morton and cutely lobbed if forward to Herd, who slipped in on with his head then deftly passed to Wilson, who smacked it into the net. The Hamilton centre was presented by Herd with an even better opening shortly afterwards, but he failed to get sufficient boot to the ball and the opportunity was lost. This escape acted as an inspiration to Rangers. Marshall, the life and soul of the attack, sent in several testing shots, and headed an Archibald corner kick against the crossbar, while Archibald and McPhail also brought out the saving abilities of Wright. Only five minutes of the first half remained when the minds of the Ibrox coterie were relieved by English, who snapped up a ball headed out by Bulloch and like a flash drove it into the corner of the net. The second half may be summed up as a miserable display. The Accies had lost their earlier confidence; there was little or no attempt at concerted moving and only on rare occasions did they get within firing distance of the Ibrox keeper. That Rangers were the more aggressive force this half was undoubtedly due to the grand leading-out of Marshall and to his persistent efforts to burst through the Hamilton defence. Several times he was just beaten on the post, but with eleven minutes to go he picked up an Archibald cross and smote the ball straight and true to the back of the net. Few players come in for special commendation, but the highest encomiums are due Allan and Marshall. The Hamilton right-back displayed fine tackling and kicking powers and was responsible for the complete subjection of Alan Morton. The rangersÂ’ inside-right was easily the outstanding forward on view and must seriously be considered for international honours. Of the others Wright, Phil Watson, Moffat and D Wilson were best for the Accies, and McAulay, Brown, Archibald and McPhail for Rangers
