Match Trivia

Two minutes from time at Douglas Park occurred one of the most remarkable penalty-kick incidents I have ever seen, which resulted in Hamilton Academicals saving a point which they can hardly be said to have deserved. There was such a pack of players in the Rangers’ goal area that there was some excuse for the referee seeing nothing whatever of what occurred. The ball came across the goalmouth head-high and seemed well on its way out of the danger area, when Buchanan went up to head it, with a hand up beside his head. The ball passes over him, and there was an immediate clamour by the Hamilton forwards for a penalty kick. Mr Innes, as in duty bound, called over his linesmen, and in presence of the two captains took their reading of the incident, which was that Buchanan had fisted the ball. ‘Jock’ Wilson beat Tom Hamilton from the spot. Now, while Hamilton were not the better side, they should not have needed a penalty-kick to take both points, besides one. Three ‘pinches’ went abegging in the second half which should all have produced goals at such short range. In the first instance Dave Wilson hit a standing ball far too gently, although Tom Hamilton’s save was a marvellous one all the same. Then, the Douglas Park centre completely missed a ball which came right to his tow in front of an open goal, while Moffat foozled a shot and sent the ball spinning off the side of his boot with a chance almost as easy. McPhail’s goal, six minutes after the start, was a great affair. Morton’s cross puzzled the defenders, who failed to get rid of it, and McPhail ran full tilt at the ball as it came to him and sent it into the corner of the net with terrific force. Nicoll had far more direct saving to do than Tom Hamilton and gave a fine display though he was lucky sometimes to be in line – one especially when Brown hooked in a wonderful shot from a knee-high ball. ‘Jock’ Wilson was a good a back as there was on view. Craig and Buchanan had too much ground to cover with Meiklejohn lying back, and the Rangers wing forwards were not up to their usual. McPhail was the strong man in front. Phil Wilson was a hero in the Academicals defence, but the men on each side of him were not so good. The forwards had dash with little method, and far too many passes went astray at crucial moments.
