Match Trivia

The Rangers had to fight terribly hard to gain the points at Hamilton, and they could not have grumbled had the Academicals succeeded in drawing the match. Fought out in a pouring rain and on a very heavy pitch, as was to be expected, the play was of moderate quality, although the dash and keenness which the players put into their work atoned to some little extent for the absence of those pretty touches, which with better footing, both teams are capable of producing. The result was that the interest of the spectators, who would number close upon 8000, was maintained till the final whistle. In the opening minutes there was an almost unanimous appeal for a penalty by the homesters, Law having brought down Irvine when the left-winger was clean through. The claim was negative, and the Rangers went away on the right. Hogg was fouled, and from the free kick Hunter headed past Slavin. The point came rather unexpectedly, but there was another sensation when within a couple of minutes, the ex-Airdrieonian; getting the home backs in two minds, went through and scored a second point. The Academicals did not let these happenings upset them, and Irvine and Freeman were very noticeable. The centre forward was boring his way through when he was upset, and Davie beat Lock from the place kick. The Rangers had a good deal of defending to do in the early stages of the second half, but they lived it down, and when Brownlie upset Hunter in the penalty area the latter took full advantage of the place kick and shot his own and his side’s third goal. Previous to this there had been signs of temper amongst the players. The bad feeling brought about numerous fouls, and eventually culminated in Hunter and Davie being sent to the pavilion. The Academicals attacked in the closing stages and Irvine beat Lock amid much excitement. A few minutes from time the Johnstone lad should have equalised, with Lock out of his goal, but he sent past. Both goalkeepers did well, and the back play was also good. Davie kicked magnificently and Brownlie tackled well. Law was the better of the Rangers’ pair although McKenzie was by no means weak. The Academicals halves, despite the absence of Scott and Watson, gave a capital display. McLaughlin was the outstanding man in the line. Stewart kept a firm hold of the Ranger’ right wing, and Black improves week by week. Stark played a quiet but effective game in the Ibrox middle line, and May caught the eye for sound tackling, and good forcing play. Forward the winners were well served by Hunter, Reid and Hogg, although the Baillieston youth could have finished with more accuracy. Smith was not nearly so successful as usual, and McPherson found the ground a big handicap. In the Hamilton attack Irvine was in fine form, and is now rapidly realising the early expectations of the Academical managers. Atkinson wrought tremendously hard, and Freeman was always worrying the Light blue defenders. The ground was not to the liking of Waugh, but he put out many clever passes. Main, who deputised for Moran, did fairly well, but was very unlucky in the goal-mouth
