Match Trivia

Scandinavian Tour Match. “The playing pitch was found to be hard, and as there is no grass, it was well watered to keep the dust down. This is the first visit of any British team to Christiania, and we were greeted by the large crowd before starting, and sheered to the echo during the game in the heartiest manner. The game itself calls to little comment. The ‘Light Blues; went off with a bang, Reid scoring twice in the first 15 minutes. This was followed with goals from Gordon, Hendry and Bennett. At half-time the score was 5-0 in favour of Rangers. After a very lengthy interval the game was started, and in a few minutes Hendry and Waddell had scored. The crowd was then treated to some ornamental work. Bennett, Smith and Hendry having the Norwegian defence in a tangle. It was very pretty to look at, and it certainly amused the crowd not a little, but the spectators here do not want that, it is goals they want. Every goal – good, bad or indifferent – is cheered heartily, so the game alerted to suit the crowd, and other five were added, bringing the total up to twelve nil. This was the final result, and the game was finished with the Grenlands Kredslag players giving us three hearty cheers. The ‘Light Blues’ players attempted to return the compliment, but the crowd had invaded the pitch, and it took a bit of work to get to the pavilion. The officials were quite delighted with the result, as they explained it would show their players how much behind they were in the finer points of the game and the need there was for constant practice. The British Ambassador Mr Finlay accompanied by Mrs Finlay, and Colonel Sturt, the Danish ex-Minister of War, were present at the game.
