Match Trivia

The Rangers kicked off, and the game at once assumed a very fast aspect, both teams playing with great vigour. The home forwards were the first to assert themselves, young Allan sending in a shot which Haddow held and sent down to Mitchell. Returning to the attack, the Thistle right wing had a look-in, McPherson parting effort just missing by a few inches. The Thistle continued to press, and a miss kick by Drummond let them in, but Haddow was on the alert, and saved smartly. From end to end the ball travelled rapidly neither side being able to obtain an advantage. A foul in front of the Rangers goal looked dangerous, but Drummond saved cleverly. Fouls were frequent on both sides, and from one of these Hannah scored the first point of the match. From this reverse the Rangers played up more eagerly, but all their efforts to beat the Thistle’s backs were futile. After some clever passing on the Rangers right, H McCreadie sent in a swift shot, which struck the under side of the crossbar and went through. Halftime result – Thistle 1 goal: Rangers 1 goal. Without leaving the field, ends were changed, and at once the Rangers were on the offensive, the Thistle goal having narrow escape, and from a foul in front of goal H McCreadie ran the ball through, thus putting his team in the lead. With steady pertinacity the Rangers kept up the attack, and in other five minutes H McCreadie again scored. This reverse put the Thistle on their mettle, and Hannah worked hard to keep his forwards together, but Gow and Drummond broke up their combination at every attempt. Not to be denied, the home front rank kept at it, and Cunningham wound up a determined bit of play by notching another point. Five minutes from the close McPherson of the Thistle had a grand run from midfield, and passing all opposition, he banged the ball into goal, and Haddow let it slip through. Settling down again, the Rangers got the upper hand, and kept the play almost entirely confined to the Thistle end, where they could not find an opening, as Herd and Neil were playing with great caution. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Thistle 2 goals.
