Match Trivia
North American Tour - Glasgow Rangers soccer team, champions of the dribbling game in Scotland, defeated Fall Rover, champions of the United States here this afternoon on Sargent Field, 3-2 before a crowd of 10,000 howling fans, mostly of them yelling for Fall River. The Rangers grabbed off the game in the first period by superior playing. Their forwards were far nippier than the Fall River lads and their half-backs, fullbacks and goaltend were right on the spot for the opening 45 minutes. Their close passing and intricate moves tickled the fans, although they were somewhat lucky on two of their goals, particularly the one Meiklejohn scored. In the second period, the Scots were mostly outplayed by the Marksmen, who came into their own stride, bagging two goals while holding the Rangers’ front line at bay. Manger Struth crossed up the Fall River players and fans by using Nicholson and Buchanan and Keeping Morton, McPhail, Muirhead and R Hamilton on the side lines. The Fall River team trotted out as advertised. The rangers won the toss and Nilsen kicked off. A beautiful movement by the right wing of the Rangers looked dangerous, but Smith drove wide of the posts. Fall River came into the game but only a minute for Gray sent the Light Blues, who by the way played in while, back towards the Fall River goal. Fall River was defending now and a rush by Nicholson saw Reder clear. Nilsen sent along to While, who outfooted Gray and crossed to McAuley only to see that player miss on his drive. The Rangers unleashed a torrid attack and forced a corner. The ball was headed by Smith, but Fall River got it out of the goalmouth and another corner fell to the Rangers. Bob MacAuley booted this one out of danger. Scotty Nilsen sent one ahead, but Buchanan stopped McNab. On this Rangers attack, Brown opened the scoring with a shot that fooled Reder. It was rather a soft goal, but it counted just the same. Fall Rover braced and on one of their attack White had a good chance but sent a soft shot straight at Hamilton who had no trouble clearing. McNab was having all kinds of chances sent his way, but away off in form. When he missed with a grand opening in front of him, the Fall River fans groaned. The rangers again took the play in hand and, weaving past the defence of the United States champions, tested Reder twice in succession. McPherson tried to beat Hamilton with a long drive, but the big goalie gathered in the ball and punted it clear. Davie Meiklejohn was head and shoulders over all the Rangers when it came to getting them out of danger. Time and again that clever centre half-back saved the day for the Scottish champs. Fall River was finding the going hard but kept plugging. McNab was presented with a real opening. Beating his man, he set sail for goal and with nothing to do but drive past Hamilton preferred to try and walk it in. Meiklejohn nipped the ball just off his toe as he was about to do the trick. It was a bad break for Fall River. Nicholson was getting lots of the ball and he and McGill were having frequent tussles for the mastery. The Rangers forced two corners, but both were cleared. Then Fall River got one and from the flag kick should have netted, but Gray got in the way of the ball when Hamilton was beaten. Smith was giving the Fall Rover defence plenty to worry. He kept swinging that ball along. Archibald and Marshall each had openings, but they mulled them up. The Fall Rover forwards had no cohesion at this stage of the game. Passes from the half-backs were most of the time landing at the feet of the Rangers and for a spell the Light Blue forwards ran the Marksmen dizzy. Reder made two good saves and then from 35 yards out Meiklejohn let drive a long drive. The ball was covered by Reder, but in some inexplicable manner he permitted the leather to roll through his hands and into the net for the Rangers’ second goal. To make matters worse, Smith outwitted McGill, McAuley and Priestley on a play in front of the Fall River goal and then outjumped all three of them, and Reder to boot, and headed the ball into the open net for the Rangers’ third score. Fall River was a different team in the second half. Ballantyne sent While away and then things began to happen in front of the Rangers’ goal. Two corners fell to the Fall River team, but both were cleared. Hamilton made a great save from McAulay. Then McNab fooled Buchanan and passed to Gonsalves, who promptly placed the ball in the back of the net past Hamilton. Fall River again attacked, and again a corner fell to them. Two good tries by McNab were block. Then Gonsalves nearly knocked the upright down with a rocket drive that had Hamilton beaten, but the ball hit the post and rebounded back into play. Meiklejohn again displayed brainy playing, going back to nip a shot by While that had beaten Gray and looked like beating the goalie. Hamilton made a great save from McNab and then Nilsen was smartly brought down when he appeared set. With a minute to go Nilsen smacked the ball by Hamilton on a clever drive and the stands went wild. But it was too late to change the result for time was up.
