Match Trivia

The visit of Rangers to Brockville attracted one of the largest crowds of the season, there being nearly 10,000 spectators. Unfortunately the weather broke down a few hours prior to the start of the game, which affected the attendance, large as it was, but the ground although a trifle sticky, was otherwise in good condition. Rangers kicked off in a perfect downpour of rain, but neither side had any advantage from the wind, which blew across the field. The Rangers at once set up a determined attack and but for Agnew, Bennett must have got through. As it was, the relief was short, as the Rangers’ outside right caused Stewart to handle in the nest minute. The Falkirk custodian saved, but in doing so the already greasy ball slipped from his hands, and in trying to effect a clearance he had to run out fully twenty yards from goal when he was dispossessed. The ball was sent right into the Falkirk goal, and Morrison on the goal line kicked the ball against Reid from whom it rebounded into the net. Encouraged by this somewhat lucky and early success, the Rangers had the better of the following exchanges, but the Falkirk defenders stood well up to the opposition, and although Stewart was frequently called upon, his goal was only on one occasion in real danger, and then Orrock, who was the best back afield, cleared brilliantly. At the other end of the field, Lock was caused great anxiety by the Falkirk forwards, shots by Logan, Brown and Robertson almost taking effect. The Bairns in their anxiety to equalise, forced a couple of unsuccessful corners, but the pressure they were having on the Rangers goal was bound to tell, and a few minutes from the interval Robertson equalised, after some clever individual play by Logan. The Rangers protested strongly on the point being allowed, alleging Robertson offside, but the referee was firm in his decision. Half-time finding the score level at one all, the Bairns attacked on the resumption, and for the first few minutes had the Rangers defence in a quandary. More steadinesses in the home attack at this stage would have given Falkirk the lead, Lock easily saving the balls that came his way. On two occasions he was very nearly neaten. Brown and then Croal in succession just missed. Reid who was well shadowed throughout by Anderson, got away and for the first time became really dangerous. Stewart effected a daringly brilliant save by running out, at two players falling in their anxiety to save the ball. The game throughout was conducted on the most strenuous lines, and both goals had several narrow escapes from downfall. The Rangers’ Brown struck the upright with a terrific drive, and this was followed by the Falkirk player of the same name missing by the narrowest possible margin. It looked as if the defences on both sides were going to be able to withstand the attacks, when some two minutes to the close Gibbons clinched a clever Falkirk forward movement by scoring the best goal of the match. The excitement was a menace, and Falkirk looked all over winners when three minutes to go, the Rangers were awarded a corner. This was successfully cleared, but another followed, and from it Campbell equalised the game, to the delight of the Ibrox enthusiasts. On the run of play, the Rangers could be said to be a trifle lucky in returning home with one point to their credit
